Protect invoiced orders from edits that break the bill

Once an order is invoiced, carrier, rate, and stops should freeze. Build one Rocket Engine rule so dispatch can't change them and finance stops chasing.

The situation

An order gets invoiced on Tuesday. On Wednesday a dispatcher swaps the carrier because the original fell through. The invoice now disagrees with the order, and finance finds out from the customer.

The workflow

  1. In Rocket Engine, create a rule on Orders with the trigger Record committed. Pick it over Record created or Record updated: a “has changed” condition needs the value the field held before this save, and only the commit event carries it.
  2. Condition: status equals invoiced and carrier has changed (the Has Not Changed condition, negated).
  3. Action: Block Save with the message “This order is invoiced. Reopen the invoice before changing the carrier.”
  4. Bypass: role admin, so a manager can still fix a genuine mistake.

Extend it

  • Add rate and stops to the same rule with separate messages.
  • Send finance a notification when an admin uses the bypass.
